Communication Challenges

The more essential part of any personal development effort is to keepup the skill of communicating with others -be it in business dealings, family affairs, and for that matter any relationships. If you often find yourself misunderstanding others or experiencing difficulty in getting your point across clearly, what you say and what you don't say are equally important. Keep the following challenges in mind all the time while communicating with others.
Challenge One: Listen first and acknowledge what you hear, even if you don't agree with it, before expressing your experience or point of view. Acknowledging the feelings and wants that people express in word and mood.  Actively acknowledging another person's experience does not have to mean that you agree or approve. Compassionately allow people to feel whatever they feel.  People are much more likely to listen if they have been listened to with actively expressed acknowledgments.  In order to get more of your conversation partner's attention in tense situations, pay attention first: listen and give a brief restatement of what you have heard (especially feelings) before you express your own needs or position. The kind of listening recommended here separates acknowledging from approving or agreeing.
Challenge Two: Explaining your conversational intent and inviting consent by using one of 30 basic conversational invitations such as, ``Right now I would like to take a few minutes and ask you about... [subject matter ].`` When would be a good time?" The exercise for this step will encourage you to expand your list of possible conversations and to practice starting a wide variety of them. The more involvement a conversation is going to require of the other person, the more you will benefit by sharing your conversational goal and inviting the conscious cooperation of your conversation partner.
Challenge Three: Expressing yourself more clearly and more completely   - giving your listeners the  information they need to understand (mentally reconstruct) your experiences more fully. One good way is to use ”the five I-statements”: What/how I (1)observe, (2)am feeling, (3) because I interpret/evaluate/need, and now I (4)want to request, and (5)envision/hope for from request.
Challenge Four: Translating  your (and other people's)  criticisms and complaints into requests & and explaining the positive results of having your request granted. Do this for both your own complaints and the complaints that others bring to you.  Focusing on the positive outcome shows respect to the recipient of a request as having a positive contribution to make, and shifts focus from past mistakes to present and future successes.
Help your listeners comply by explaining your requests with a "so that...", "it would help me to... if you would..." or "in order to..." Also, when you are receiving criticism and complaints from others, translate and restate the complaints as action requests. ....").
Challenge Five: Asking questions more "open-endedly" and more creatively. For example "How did you like that movie?" is an open-ended question that invites a wide range of answers. "Did you like it?" suggests only "yes" or "no" as answers and does not encourage discussion. Sincerely asked open-ended questions can open up our conversation partners and allow for a wide range of responses. (How comfortable are you with this suggestion?)
Challenge Six:: Thanking & Expressing more gratitude, appreciation, encouragement and delight in everyday life.  In a world full of problems, look for opportunities to give praise.  Both at home & at work, it is the bond of appreciation that makes relationships strong enough to allow for problem-solving and differing needs. To build more satisfying relationships with the people around us, express more appreciation, delight, affirmation, encouragement and gratitude. Always remember healthy relationships need a core of mutual appreciation.

An honor indeed

The Institute of Practical Accountancy [IPA]  is a registered educational society which trains the commerce students to acquire employable skills to work on computer based Accountancy packages. IPA Awards are presented in Hyderabad, India every year to the Entrepreneurs, Lecturers and Commerce Practicing Professionals [CA, CMA & CS] during its Annual Day celebrations. I was nominated for the IPA Proficiency Award 2009 - Practicing Company Secretary. The function supposed to take place in 2009 was postponed due to disturbances in Hyderabad city.
However, the IPA Proficiency Award was presented to me during the 17th Anniversary Celebrations of the Institute of Practical Accountancy [IPA] on 8th October, 2010.
What impressed me and my wife Lakshmi who accompanied me was that the receiving the guests and reception on arrival of Awardees. This well attended function was started well within the scheduled time, the presentation of Awards as the masters of ceremony  narrate the citation of the Awardee. I felt it highly honored of receiving from the dignitaries, the Award + Certificate + Shawl + Garland + An Eco friendly bag to keep the things received. All most all  Awardees  were given an opportunity to make acceptance speeches. In my brief acknowledgment, I have informed the audience about my impressions on nominating me for this award which reminds me and reiterates from time to time my obligation to keep-up and upkeep professional ethics and proficiency in rendering my professional services as Practicing Company Secretary.
The entire proceeding were well planned and conducted with a professional touch. While the festive flavor prevailed in the Auditorium, the Chief Guest Justice Dr Y Bhaskar Rao, Former Chief Justice of High Court of Karnataka in his very effective speech appreciated the concept of recognizing the commerce professionals who have been demonstrating professional excellence with service bent of mind.
I congratulate and compliment Shri Prakash, Director IPA who has been brain behind initiation this sort of Awards and the Committee for organizing a function in a grand scale.

Key To Experience Success

We have heard people liberally using "Failure is the steppingstone to success". In my opinion success comes as a result of applying essential key factors.  Here are TEN principles generally practiced by successful people.
  1. Vision: Successful people will have a clear picture of what exactly they want to achieve or become. They Keep this picture at the top of their mind at all the times.
  2. Belief: They believe that they will succeed.  Success oriented persons stay away from negative influences (people, books/articles, anything negative), which make them doubt their ability to succeed.
  3. Responsibility: Successful people realize that they alone are responsible for the outcome of their efforts and their future.
  4. Affirm: They make it as a habit of saying out loud what they hope to achieve. Success tip for them is to speak of it in the present tense, e.g., 'I am fit and trim', as opposed to 'I will be fit and trim'. Another tip they apply is to write down the affirmation and then look at it (or better still, rewrite it) several times each day. This helps their mind stay focused on the goal.
  5. Commitment: They make a firm commitment to action, decide to take steps to achievegoals then honour the commitments.
  6. SMART goal:   Successful persons keep their  goal to be Specific, Measurable and Motivational, Attainable and Attractive, Realistic   and Timed.
  7. Plan & Take Action: They Work out a plan of action. Break down the plan into baby steps. Take a step or two each day, reminding yourself that each step is bringing you closer to your goal.
  8. Persistence: Successful persons do not give up until they have achieved what they desire.
  9. Gratitude: They maintain an attitude of gratitude, knowing that their dream is about to become a reality.
  10. Become a giver. In their relationships, they always think in terms of what they can do for the others. They tend to be kind and generous to all .
I keep trying to follow these principles consistently. Are you also applying to your life situations?  This key WILL guarantee you to experience success in any endeavor.
